Summer Food Service for Needy Kids

It’s no secret that the economy is taking a toll on everyone’s budget.  More & more people are finding it difficult to feed their families.  In fact, the most recent data (released in November 2010) shows that 14% of Washington’s households are food insecure (meaning, they are unsure of the source of their next meal).  So this posting is very important & one I hope you will share with your friends, families, post on your Facebook wall, etc.

Every year the USDA funds a national program called the Summer Food Service Program.  This program provides no cost breakfasts, lunches, & snacks to children ages 1-18.  For WA residents, you can read all about it here & search for a site by zip code.

In the Seattle area the program will run June 27th through August 26th.  You can view the menus for breakfasts, lunches, & snacks online.  You can also call 1-888-4-FOOD-WA (1-888-436-6392) for more information on the prorgam in Washington state.

Please, spread the word about this program!  This program is severely underutilized.  42% of students in Washington are eligible to receive free or reduced-price school meals, yet in the summer of 2009, only 11% of students regularly receiving subsidized school meals participated in the summer meal program.

Spread the word & help feed hungry kids this summer!

Thanks to BMIM reader, Margit for the link to this amazing program!
